Paratico
Paratico lies on the shores of Lake Iseo and has been in existance since at least 975. The castle probably dates from the 13th century. The Lantieri family who were in power in the middle ages sided with the Ghibellines in the wars of the period. The parish church dates from the 15th century and was significantly updated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early industrial development was demonstrated in Fusia's water mill and irrigation ditch while the beauty of its surroundings and fine hotels made it a natural tourist centre.
Paratico today
The commune of Paratico is in province of Brescia which is part of the region of Lombardy in the heart of northern Italy in easy reach of Milano, Verona, Venice, Padua and other areas of great interest. It is in easy reach of Milano Bergamo airport with flights from Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.
Paratico has a population of 4,449 and it's neighbouring town of Sarnico 6,642. They lie in the beautiful wine producing area of Franciacorte. Along with the history and beautiful surroundings this makes it a popular tourist area.
The main industrial employers in the area specialise in rubber gaskets and components. Production and maitenance of small boats is also important.
The library in Paratico hosts many cultural events. Other regular cutural events take place on the shores of the lake. The sculpture and poetry trail is especially intriguing.
Friendship history
The original contact with Paratico was when Deputy Mayor Mariella Smiroldo and Councillor Leda Liborio visited us in 2015. We then visited Paratico in 2016 to discuss developing the friendship. The first cultural exchange was in August/September 2017 when David Parry with Chloe Rowntree and Erin Yates from Calder High went to help teach English at a summer camp for local children
